At this point we know about twelve mechs that will be available at release. As a group, they are fairly evenly split into the light, medium, heavy and assault classes with four heavies and only two mediums. Let’s look at the mechs and see if there’s anything to see. For each mech, the name will be listed, followed by tonnage, its speed in hexes [walking/running/jumping], the total number of heat sinks and the armament.
Light (20-35 tons)
Commando 25 tons [6/9/0] 10HS 1xSRM6, 1xSRM4, 1xMedium Laser
Spider 30 tons [8/12/8] 10HS 2xMedium Lasers
Jenner 35 tons [7/11/5] 10HS SRM4, 4xMedium Lasers
No 20 tonners and a full complement of fast, well-armed scouts. Both the Spider and the Jenner jump and can get into a fair amount of heat trouble and none of these has a long-ranged weapon.
Medium (40-55 tons)
Hunchback 50 tons [4/6/0] 13HS AC20, 2xMedium Lasers, Small Laser
Trebuchet 50 tons [5/8/0] 10HS 2xLRM15, 3xMedium Lasers
Oddly the most poorly represented class of mech with only two mediums total and both at 50 tons. The Hunchback is the brawler of the two and the Trebuchet the stand-off mobile unit. At 50 tons, the Trebuchet features the first longer-ranged weapon.
Heavy (60-75 tons)
Dragon 60 tons [5/8/0] 10HS LRM10, AC5, 2xMedium Lasers
Catapult 65 tons [4/6/4] 15HS 2xLRM15, 4xMedium Lasers
Grasshopper 70 tons [4/6/4] 22HS LRM5, Large Laser, 4xMedium Lasers
Orion 75 tons [4/6/0] 10HS AC10, LRM15, SRM4, 2xMedium Lasers
Two jumping Heavies and a speedster? This is a very mobile group of heavy mechs. All the possible weights are represented and at 70 tons the Grasshopper wields the first Large Laser we’ve seen.
Assault (80-100 tons)
Awesome 80 tons [3/5/0] 28HS 3xPPC, Small Laser
Stalker 85 tons [3/5/0] 20HS 2xLRM10, 2xSRM6, 2xLarge Lasers, 4xMedium Lasers
Atlas 100 tons [3/5/0] 20HS AC20, LRM20, SRM6, 4xMedium Lasers
A thoroughly solid group of Assault mechs. No gimmicks here, just crushing power grinding its way forward. One surprise is that of the 12 revealed mechs only the Awesome has a PPC.
Looking at the list, it seems at least possible that there will be no Flamers, Machine Guns, AC2s or SRM2s at launch. At the very least, they’re only available via customization (or variants). Long-ranged energy weapons are in short supply in the base classes as well. Pulling Large Lasers and PPCs from STACs is probably going to feel pretty good.
I’m surprised by how mobile the Heavies are. Everything but the Orion is spending a lot of tonnage simply to move around. I was also surprised to see the Medium class represented solely by two 50 tonners (though they’re solid 50 tonners). Looking at the list, I’m guessing our starting lances will feature a Heavy, a Medium and two Lights. Maybe a Dragon, a Trebuchet, a Jenner and a Commando? That would be a fast lance for the weight with a good mix of weapons and a bit of jump capacity. At any rate, I think the list of twelve is a pretty good mix of mechs.
Looking forward as always to more info and thoroughly enjoying speculating with what we have!
